Prof.
Sanjay Sarma Joins OATSystems' Board
Of Directors
Auto-ID
Expert and former Chairman of MIT's Auto-ID
Center to Play Major Role in Further
Securing OATSystems' Position As The
Leader in RFID Software
WATERTOWN,
MASS.-NOV. 3, 2003 - OATSystems,
Inc., developer of the world's most
widely deployed standards-based RFID
(radio frequency identification) solutions,
today announced that Prof. Sanjay Sarma
will join the company's Board of Directors.
Sarma, who co-founded MIT's Auto-ID
Center in 1999 and served as its Chairman
of Research until recently, is widely
regarded as one of the world experts
in RFID.
"Sanjay is, without doubt, the leading expert
on the EPC system and real-world RFID deployments," said
Prasad Putta, founder of OATSystems. "We are
incredibly fortunate to have him join us. He has
been at the forefront of developing the standards
and the technologies that have made commercial RFID
possible, and it will be a huge advantage for OATSystems
to have his expertise and industry credibility behind
our development effort."
"Joining OATSystems was an easy decision for
me," said Sarma. "Having worked side-by-side
with the company to develop many of the key components
that make large-scale RFID deployments possible,
it was clear to me that they are in a uniquely strong
position. OATSystems has an enormous lead in building
and deploying the kinds of systems that will drive
dramatic savings and efficiencies in the retail,
manufacturing, supply chain, and logistics sectors.
Now, we will be working together to deliver innovative,
next-generation RFID applications that offer exceptional
value to our customers."
OATSystems is the developer of Senseware™,
the world's first standards-based RFID
software platform designed to work with
all leading RFID hardware. Senseware
is currently being used by some of the
world's largest retail, consumer packaged
goods and pharmaceutical companies in
their RFID deployments. RFID technology
allows manufacturers, retailers, logistics
providers, and other organizations to "tag" physical
goods with tiny radio transponders that
can then be used to identify the goods
without having to visually inspect them.
Applications for the technology include
automatic inventory management for retailers
and manufacturers,
improved supply chain efficiency for
logistics companies and their customers,
and better tracking of goods to reduce
theft and loss.
Industry analysts and major retailers
have estimated that widespread adoption
of RFID technology could save companies
tens of billions of dollars annually.
One analysis indicated that the world's
largest retailer alone could save as
much as $8.35 billion per year - more
than the total annual revenue of half
the companies on the Fortune 500.
